Slow Fashion & the Modern Closet
What is slow fashion?
Slow fashion is exactly what it sounds like: fashion that has been created by taking time. Time to be aware and considerate of the processes and resources that go into making clothing. It’s all about buying less, buying better quality so that your pieces last longer and prioritizing fair treatment of people, animals and the planet-everything that gets forgotten by fast fashion.
Why shop slow fashion?
You may be wondering what the difference is between slow fashion and sustainable fashion. Although shopping sustainably is a wonderful start when looking to build a more conscious closet, the slow fashion movement addresses the damage of overconsumption and buying things we don’t need, producing quantities that can’t be sold & wasting resources all without taking into consideration the ethical repercussions of manufacturing. We have to prioritize slowing down, considering what we need and how our purchases impact the people and planet around us.
What to look for when building a slow fashion wardrobe:
Look for sustainable, high quality materials, such as linen.
Look for timeless, eternally stylish silhouettes that won’t go in and out of trend in one season
Choose smaller, local shops over large chains
Look for brand that sell using locally sourced, locally made or locally sold pieces
Smaller, limited runs of seasonal collections (that have not been mass produced)
