How to Care for your Linen
With proper care and washing, linen can last up to 30 years. It won’t lose its shape and beauty unlike other fabrics, becoming softer and softer with time.
Before You Wash
Before washing, be sure to pre-treat any stains or marks on your linen garment. Dab with stain remover in a hidden area. Be sure to check the care instructions beforehand, as some companies may use blended linen fabrics that require specific care and pre-washed linen fabric will be less prone to shrinking when washed. If specific temperatures are mentioned, be sure to adhere to the recommendations.
Washing Linen Clothes
If machine washing: Be sure to wash your linen on your machine’s delicate cycle. Avoid cold or very hot water and use the maximum water level to allow it to move uninhibited. Don’t crowd the machine to avoid twisting or pulling. Wash with similar colours and weights.
If hand washing, only use a gentle swishing motion, avoiding twisting, wringing or vigorous scrubbing.
Wash in lukewarm temperatures to minimize shrinkage and be sure to wash as infrequently as possible to maintain the integrity of the fabric. Use a mild detergent and be sure to rinse thoroughly before rinsing.
Drying Linen Clothes
If your linen garment is pre-washed, it is safe to dry it in a tumble dryer on a low temperature, removing when still slightly damp, however the ideal is to air dry your clothes laid out flat as hangers and clothespins can create creases and marks or cause the garment to lose their original shape.
If you are ironing your linen, be sure to do it while the clothes are still slightly damp.
Over time, your linen clothes will become softer and softer, making them even more cosy and luxurious.
