What are the Differences between Cotton & Linen
These two materials have a lot in common. Both are made from completely natural sources-with linen being made from the flax plant and cotton coming from the cotton plant. Both are environmentally friendly & biodegradeable. They are both good on your skin and both are seasonless- suitable for winter or summer dressing.
What is the Difference between Cotton & Linen?
Linen fibers are extracted from the stalk of the flax plant, with longer fibers compared to cotton fibers, thus giving linen more durability, breathability and thermoregulation. Cotton however has more versatility than linen, even being used in the medical industry. Here, we take a closer look at the different aspects to consider when comparing these two wonderful materials.
Flexibility -Cotton is more flexible than Linen
Softness -Cotton is softer than Linen
Durability-Linen is more durable than Cotton
Texture-Linen has a rough texture that smooths over time, whereas Cotton has a smooth texture right away.
Absorbency-Cotton is more absorbent than Linen
Breathability-Linen is more breathable than Cotton
Weight-Linen is Heavier than Cotton
Hypoallergenic-Linen is more hypoallergenic than Cotton
Why is Linen more expensive than Cotton?
Creating Linen from the flax plant is a time consuming and laborious process, meaning linen is less available in the clothing market. In addition, to get long fibers of linen, cultivators have to be extra careful during the harvesting process, as the stalks are very weak and can easily break if the stalk breaks, giving short fibers. Longer fibers give linen more durability and strength, so the process is slow, along with the weaving process. Lastly, linen grows well in a moist environment, which is why Ireland is an ideal location to produce this material.
